Cracks, we all have one, but we'd just as soon our parts didn't.............

We won't make any cracks about cracks. The cracks we deal with aren't sold by dudes with beepers. But the moment a crack happens your voice may crack and you may wish to hear the crack of a large caliber firearm.

At Weller Tractor, we are concerned about cracks because when there is a crack in a part, it's no laughing matter. How can we avoid cracks? I'll take a crack at explaining how we protect you against cracks. First of all, any used part that is removed for

sale at WTS is visually inspected for fissures (cracks). Now we all know that not all cracks are visible (stop thinking about the plumber's pants RIGHT NOW), and that a purely visual inspection will not protect you fully.

The method we use most for crack detection is called "dry-flux" or Magna Flux. This method uses an electromagnet and dry powdered iron for crack detection. When the electromagnet is applied to a metal surface and the powder is sprinkled on, the powder will adhere to the crack, whether it is a visible crack or not. Magna Flux is the most frequently used method of crack detection at Weller Tractor, and is useful in 99% of our work.

When a crack is detected it is then the technician's job to determine whether the crack should be repaired or the part junked. We send quite a lot of our work to machine shops for inspection or repair, and they also use the dry flux method, as well as a couple of different chemical and black light methods.

The bottom line is this: We don't want to send you a part that will not stand up to the rigors of your application. A part with an unrepaired crack can cause problems. We're here to SOLVE problems, not cause them.
